Kitchen Layout Options

Compare kitchen layouts on a measured plan with appliance doors and drawers drawn open. The best option provides usable preparation space, storage and circulation within the room’s fixed openings and service constraints.

Which arrangement fits the room?

DecisionUseful whenCheck carefully
One wallThe kitchen occupies one edge of an open room or a compact space.Enough uninterrupted preparation surface remains between storage, sink and cooking areas.
GalleyTwo runs can use a narrow room efficiently.Open drawers and appliance doors leave a workable route; through traffic does not cut across cooking.
L-shapedTwo adjoining walls allow an open side for circulation or dining.Corner access and the distance between main tasks work with the actual cabinet sizes.
U-shapedThree sides can provide storage and worktop within an enclosed zone. The internal aisle, corners and tall units do not make the room crowded.
IslandThe room can support a separate work surface, storage or seating.Clearances work on every side, with seats occupied and nearby appliances open.

Run the same test on each option

Place the exact appliance dimensions on each plan. Show the fridge open, the dishwasher pulled down and the drawers you use most. Then trace a meal from food storage to preparation, cooking and clearing up. Look for a preparation surface that remains useful when someone else is washing or collecting dishes.

Check the route through the room separately from the working route. If the kitchen connects the entrance to a living room or terrace, people should be able to pass without repeatedly crossing the main preparation zone. An island with seating needs to be tested with chairs in use, not only pushed under the worktop.

  • Show full-size furniture on the plan.
  • Mark windows, door swings and radiators or fixed equipment.
  • Check storage access with neighbouring doors open.

Confirm the preferred option before detailed design

  1. 01

    Overlay existing services

Mark drainage, water, power and extraction. Ask the technical team which positions can move and what work that introduces.

  2. 02

    Check tall storage

Review light, sightlines and access around fridge, oven and pantry units. Keep daily items reachable without blocking the main aisle.

  3. 03

    Resolve the edges

Coordinate the kitchen with adjacent flooring, dining furniture and doors. Compare the preferred option with a workable fallback if service or structural checks rule it out.
