Choose interior finishes by surface and use, then review them together in the intended light. A selection is ready for ordering when the product, finish, dimensions, junctions and maintenance requirements are recorded.
Write the job of each surface
Describe what the finish will encounter: foot traffic, moving chairs, splashes, heat, sunlight, impacts or frequent cleaning. An entrance floor and a quiet bedroom wall need different checks. For an office, consider how housekeeping and furniture changes will affect the surface after the project is complete.
Ask for the selected product’s technical and care documents. Broad categories such as timber, stone or vinyl contain products with different installation and maintenance requirements. Review suitability at the exact location and check the proposed cleaning routine with the people responsible for using or maintaining the space.
Review more than a colour chip
Confirm how natural variation, batch and direction will appear across the installed area.
Check sheen, texture and contrast from the angles at which the room will be used.

Coordinate doors, skirting, adjoining flooring and fixed furniture before orders are released.
Keep a selection schedule
For example, Caesarstone specifies care precautions for its quartz and mineral surfaces. Read equivalent guidance for the actual product being selected instead of assuming a visual match has the same care needs.

Record the manufacturer, product code, finish, size and intended room or surface. Attach the current technical document and supplier information.

Approve
Label approved samples and record the decision date. Note unresolved interfaces, such as floor build-up or worktop edges, rather than treating the entire item as settled.

Procure
Confirm stock, lead time, quantities and responsibility for supply. Check proposed substitutions against performance, dimensions and the surrounding palette before acceptance.

Maintain
Collect cleaning instructions, spare-product details and relevant warranty information. Store them with the final schedule so future replacements can be identified.
